Why Porsche's case against Livingston lacks credibility |
|
Porsche's attempt to see a judicial review of London Mayor Ken livingston's proposed £25 levy on high polluting cars in London is an obvious pre-emptive admission of guilt;that a lot of their cars indeed fall within the parameters targetted by this new proposal. I find it staggering that Porsche would launch a fervent case against the mayor on the grounds of authority or lack thereof, as Porsche would have us believe. The case is based on the grounds that, according to Porsche, the mayor does not have the right to introduce such measures. I would have Porsche know, however, that according to the "The Greater London Authority Act 1999" the mayor does indeed have the power to do so. The office of the mayor is the executive office with the proper authority to run the city of London, to promote as well as protect its interests including but certainly not limited to environmental issues, in the same way the office has exercise over such issues as street litter etc. The fact that Porsche are blithely forging ahead with a plan that has been put together in a reactive and knee-jerk fashion does not help its course. The fact is Porsche cars are among the cars that would be hard hit if indeed such measures are introduced in October. Instead of bleating about Porsche should be working towards reducing the carbon emmissions from its cars. In any case, the fact that other makers of so called "gas-guzzlers" are not in bed with Porsche on this one, helps to put the case in perspective. The Low emmission zone is vital to London's bid as the worlds first city to actively tackle the issues of climate change head on. A point I would like Porsche to consider is that according to a recent report on car emmissions BMW tops the league in having reduced the carbon emmissions in its cars by as much as 26000kg/c02. My advise to Porsche? Take a leaf out of BMW's book instead of tangling yourself in legal proceedings against the mayor who is only trying to do whats best for London.

Tyre-some task is a thing of the past |
|
Say goodbye to the days of cursing furiously on the roadside whilst the rain soaks you to the core, fumbling around with wheel nuts and expending important energy reserves trying to the jack the car up whilst dodging other motorists, hell bent on staring at you because you’re changing a tyre. (Why are we compelled to stare at unlucky motorists that have blatantly got some issues on their hands, only for us to make them feel like a static freak show?)

New year celebrations are in full swing at camp MINI as they take print media awards by storm with accolades from Top Gear, What Car?, BusinessCar and Parker’s Car Guides. With successes across retail, fleet, new and used car sales, congratulations are in order for the multi-award winners. Top Gear magazine awarded ‘Best Small Car’ to the MINI for the second year in a row, but with the new MINI Clubman taking the top spot from last year’s winner, the MINI Hatch. BusinessCar magazine also awarded MINI ‘Best Supermini’ for the sixth time saying, “The MINI is a real favourite in the business car market, thanks to incredible residual values and a stylish image. It’s no surprise it’s picked up another BusinessCar Award because MINI makes financial sense for businesses and their employees love driving them.” (Ed-in-Chief Tristan Young)

Tax does have to be Taxing!

Is it my imagination or are fuel prices getting higher every week I go to fill up in this country? I’m sure it used to be less frequent? Is there a group of people going around changing the price displayed on our forecourts because they have a fetish for larger numbers to be displayed and that this is one massive hoax and I am actually only paying under £1 a litre as per six months ago?

In the never ending quest to get both TV and advertising in front of our eyeballs 24/7 Westinghouse Digital has announced plans to further its roll out of Pump-Top-TV across the US. Im sure this really fills a gap for some people, if your watching American Idol in your in car TV and have to step out to fill the tank as least this means you won't miss a thing. Can't wait for this to take over in the UK. Think of how many hooded 14 year old chavs you could crowd around one of these TVs while they drink white lightning leaving our parks empty of a night. Petrol stations, the new place to hang out! Now if only they sold White Lightning and deck-chairs we'd be all set

Its not a car....I can see that, but man couldn't pass up on posting about this bike. With a top speed of 300 mph (which it will take 30 seconds from a standstill to reach) and getting an incredible 100 mpg at a cruising speed of 100 mph this thing is no slouch. Cost is a little high though, coming in at just over £1 Million and with a build time of 3 years! This maybe a step up from my old 50cc Vespa! Click read more for some more pics.

Mini Hummer set to invade UK school runs

Looking like something straight from Halo, Hummer has come up with the HX concept vehicle.
Shown off at the Detroit motor show this year, it boasts an adaptable rear end so you can configure your Hummer in just the way you want it, be it a coupe look or a more open top battle ready look- perfect for the Chelsea school run (machine guns may be an optional extra, were not sure.)
Under the bonnet is a direct-injection 3.6-litre FlexFuel V6. Which runs on E85 bioethanol, so this Hummer is quite eco-friendly. Just a shame its not the pedestrian friendly though!

Now this is the sort of hybrid I want to drive to Tesco's with. The Fisker Karma will be able to run for 50 miles on its rechargeable electric motor, before falling back on either a petrol or diesel engine- with figures of 100 miles to the gallon being quoted with a not to shabby top speed of 125 mph. All in a nice sexy sports car designed by Henrik Fisker, the man behind the Aston DB9 and the BMW Z8. Shame that only 15000 will be made each year, so get your order in now! More pics after the jump.

Now, at the risk of being abused, cursed, hunted down like a ferral animal, then drawn and quatered before my gory remains are hung to dry in the square of public opinion, let me make my case for the much hated bane of motorists: yes the obiquitous yellow-painted speed camera.Annoyingly painted bright yellow, proudly sited along almost everywhere, pointed its all-seing eye at errant speed freaks the speed camera has caused more than just a few eyebrows. Publicly declared a nuisance on Top gear,it even has a website dedicated to its vilification.

We need more politeness on the road

Last week I was driving along Edgware road towards Hendon when I was undercut by a woman driver forcing me to break defensively. The other driver knew she was in the wrong and instead of driving off she apologised politely for cutting me off and flashed a smile, and we both drove on.It didnt cost much but such courtesy and politeness to your fellow drivers can go a long way at making the roads pleasant to drive on.It is said that
London is the most stressful city here but road rage is not the answer. We all make mistakes once in a while and when we own up to them instead of blaming the other driver or worse ignore the incident as if nothing happened sows the seeds for road rage. We need less of lane-hogging, angry hooting, undercutting, aggressive overtaking and tail gaiting. At the moment Britain is in the top five worldwide for road rage along with such rogue offenders like South Africa. Ironical for a country that was not long ago, considered the cradle of uprightness and courtesy. So if we could all show respect and consideration for fellow drivers then the roads would not be the nightmare they are today.

This week the Goverment's Sentencing Guidelines Council suggested that killer drivers could be let off with nothing more than community sentences at best and at worst get a maximum two years if there are "additional aggravating circumstances". That means people who cause death by dangerous driving could also be let off.It is now up to Justice minister Jack Straw and Mps to consider the plans.
While these plans are not yet law,the fact that such ridiculous plans could even be seriously considered defies logic. How could the Government, on one hand preach to us about their supposed drive for road safety and the eradication and subsequent prosecution of dangerous drivers on the road, yet at the same time go in the opposite direction with such surrender tactics.
